Welcome to 2019 and the winter that we have been waiting for. Those of us who live in the Southwest pray for winter rains and those like myself who have the great fortune to live in the mountains of Arizona are thankful for snow falls.

Any moisture is a blessing…

This year is starting off with plenty of it so I created this praise painting to express my gratitude to God.

Praise paintings are early morning studies on vellum paper that I create after my meditation and journaling when I first step into the studio. Simple heartfelt quick studies of what is on my mind.

“Watchman”… a painting for an Advent Cantata

It’s that time of year when my thoughts turn to the Trinity Presbyterian’s Advent Cantata. I am busy rehearsing it and this year the music is especially beautiful with Joseph Martin’s and Heather Sorenson’s new Cantata “Christmas Dreams”. Some years the music just calls for an art piece and this year was one of those.  The Advent Cantata is being performed the first weekend in December which corresponds to the first weekend of Advent so I needed to paint the art piece early.

This last weekend was the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour and since I am asked to do a demo during those three days; I felt it was a great time to work on the Advent painting. Some of you who came to the Open Studio saw it in the process.

My original idea was a Child’s Dream where a small  Christmas Manger would be under a tree and the ornaments would consist of Magi, Shepards and the Christ Child. One of the guests during the tour said, “keep it simple”.  I took it to heart since I myself was not sure the first version would really tell the story I wanted it to.  So since I work very fluidly and intuituve, the “Watchman” came to be.

Now the symbolism gives a profound statement to the beautiful words in the song  The Promise and the Prayer, “Here the music of the stars, words of hope from ancient bards. People hear the glad Noel: God will come, Emanuel.”

The Studio Tour is almost here.

IMG_1914Just as the fall arrives, I know for certain that the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour is just around the corner.  In fact, less than two weeks; so my studio is in complete chaos and the busiest time of year for me has come.  I have counted over 60 plus original acrylic paintings to display for the enjoyment of guests. Original acrylics on vellum are being matted, cards are being printed and inventory is being done.

The creek-side is being cleared of the monsoon debris so that it will be flowing for your enjoyment and my two guest artists are planning their own displays. Patricia Tyser Carberry will be back with me this year. She is an amazing glass jewelry artist who creates outstanding glass beads combined with other natural druzes and pearls. If you have never seen her work now is your opportunity.  She also creates beautiful felted silk and wool scarves.  Here is where you can check her out

My other guest artist, Carla Woody, is here for the first time and will be on the deck creek-side. She does beautiful mix-media art and exquisite beading. Her work has an indigenous flare mirroring her work with indigenous cultures in South America and the Hopi Nation.  You can check her out here.

The 11th Annual Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour on Oct. 5-7 from 10:00 to 4:00 each day is a celebration of local art. It offers you a special opportunity to visit many of the Quad-City area’s talented artists. There are 50 studios, with 80 juried artists , plus 3 art centers. There is even a Gala Pre-Tour Reception at the Elks Theater and Performing Arts Center Oct. 3 from 5:00 to 7:00.

My favorite time of year

LIQUID AMBERCan you feel it?  That crisp coolness in the morning, the rustle of the breeze, fall is settling in. Just like clockwork the Liquid Ambers over at the farmers market have started to turn and I am happy that summer is starting to say it’s adieu.

That is why I love the beginning of September a time of transition from the hot humid summer to the coolness of fall, and a new color pallet for me. Since the Liquid Amber is the first tree to herald in this time of year I thought it appropriate to paint it.  It is also the harbinger of the busiest time of year for me as a local artist.  Just one month from the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour. I am busy in the studio painting so you all have a fresh supply of beautiful art to see.

I love this new piece because of the beautiful contrast between the orange and purple, two complimentary colors.  You know me and my love of purple, it is my new neutral.  Purple goes with many of the colors I choose to paint with. A bit of purple in a painting is a wonderful thing…

AT THE MONTAGE

It has been over two weeks since I painted spontaneously from the easel.  Since my vacation to Laguna Beach, I have been busy in the studio catching up on some commission work. So when my student came in this morning after a trip to Colorado, it was a perfect time to get us both back in the swing of paint to canvas or in this case paint to vellum paper.

A quick intuitive study on paper is one of my favorite ways to loosen up after a long absence from regular painting. I call them my early morning studies, a truly spontaneous recollection of a moment in time.  This is where I catch a feeling of a memory, and put it to paper.

One of the things I love about Laguna Beach is the free trolley that runs the coast and all the way up to the Pageant of the Masters and Art Festivals.  My husband and I and our good friends had a day to explore before the Pageant so hopping on the Trolley was the way to go.  We took the line almost to the end and jumped off at the Montage Resort.  The Montage is a spectacular spot of coast line with amazing views, tucked away south-facing beaches, perfect for snorkeling; and it has immaculate grounds with specimen flora that beg to be touched and smelled. It also has well-groomed walking paths along the coast, and a beautiful veranda to sip a cold drink after your walk.

So it is no wonder that I painted a spot along the walking path that lead down to the beach, that was full of Bougainville and beautiful vistas.  I remembered thinking that the next trip I will be sure to bring my easel and do some plein-aire painting; but for now I must be content with my memories.

UNDER THE SUN: The 85th Pageant of the Masters

2018 Official Souvenir Program

No, the Pageant of the Masters running through September 1, is not about golf or surfing either. It is all about ART, and a great experience to see. Held since 1935 in the artist colony of Laguna Beach, CA, this year they are celebrating 85 years of productions.  If you are a math wizard you will probably point out to me that it should add up to 87 years. Two years during WWII they blackened the stage for the war effort.

I try to venture over to Laguna every 2 or 3 years to catch a show. A living tableau showing life-size paintings of the masters of the art world. It is really hard to explain the awesomeness of this, trust me you will never see anything like it.  Put it on your bucket list you will thank me when you go.

As an artist, it brings me OCEANS of inspiration, along with the pageant there are three art shows; The Festival Of The Arts held on the grounds of the Pageant, Art A Fair, across the street and the Sawdust Festival, next door to Art A Fair. And let’s not forget all the art galleries in the quaint and funky beach town of Laguna Beach. Did I miss telling you about the ocean and the beautiful vistas.

No wonder I come home with creativity oozing from my pours, and a sun burn. Most of all I come home with a memory of a life time.

Foral Abstraction

“Go With The Flow”   24″ X 24″

Some of you can remember when I did nothing but acrylic abstracts, mostly pours and I worked in metallic.  It was fun and it dipped my toes into the world of abstraction. They were mostly non-representational.  I am glad I went that route in my journey to find my own voice.  It helped me loosen up.

Now days I create contemporary acrylic paintings full of movement and energy.  Most of them are landscapes, but sometimes I get that yearning to become more abstracted in my work and this is such a painting.  I have been doing a lot of floral landscapes this spring season. Heading into the summer months I have gradually moved back toward my monsoon landscapes, but before I transitioned I had to create a pure abstract following in the tradition of the floral. I call it “Go With The Flow” because of the pure exuberance and feeling of freedom I experienced while creating it.

5 Steps to Curating a Show… how I put my Best Art forward

Deciding what pieces to show

When I do a show, which I do a couple of times a year, it’s an opportunity to meet new people who may have never heard of me or seen my work. It is vitally important that they see my up to date work and my best presentation.  So curating a show starts weeks and maybe months in advance.

  1. Create a body of work… Each January I set to work deciding what direction my art will go in the coming year.  I have many customers that come back year after year and they need new and fresh images to look at. So I sit down and map out what I might be painting seasonally.  This year I decided that I would do a Spring Collection that consisted mostly of floral paintings since I hadn’t created any in a few years. Now that summer has arrived I will be doing a series of new monsoon paintings, and as fall approaches I bring in a series of paintings that pop with reds and oranges and yellows.
  2. Paint in different sizes… When doing a show I want to have something in several price ranges from the seasoned collector to the new person just starting out  collecting my work.  So I have small painting 8″ X 8″ up to 30″ X 30″ or larger.  I also provide cash and carry items to bring the collector to the display, note cards and small prints are easy ways to start a conversation about my art.
  3. Hang paintings in the same color palette together… This year I found that many of my paintings have cerulean blue in them, it is one of my favorite colors, and also blends well with my other favorite colors, purple and teal.  When a person walks up to a display they want a cohesive feel and having a similar color palette will provide this.
  4. Have one large painting as the star… I make sure the painting is facing my audience. I need a focal point to draw in the viewer as they approach my space.. It maybe a jumping off place for conversation, or it may become the inspiration for a commission or help the viewer to see themselves with one of my paintings in their home.
  5. Make sure your paintings are ready to hang and displayed properly… I choose not to frame my pieces, instead I use 1 1/2″ gallery wrap canvas with sides painted in complimentary colors, and a UV coating to keep them archival.  The are ready to hang with D rings and wire. I also include a “Certificate of Authenticity” giving the copyright and medium and title of each piece. I firmly believe that every inch of your painting, front and back, should shout “I am a professional”

Black Eyed Susans

Welcome to summer, it has hit our area in full force. Hot and dry, hardly anything can grow in this arid land until the monsoon rolls in. But when it does one of the first flowers that takes hold are Black Eyed Susans.  The other day I was researching them and discovered that there are many varieties.  I saw this lovely salmon colored variety and just had to paint them. I think they celebrate the joy of summer and all the promises it brings.

Next is to find out if they will grow in my area, which I hope they do.  I am already planning a bed for them. Hopefully the Javalina will not have much appetite for them and I will have fresh bouquets every where.

These Susans are the perfect entry for my floral series, and will probably be the last because it is time for a new direction since the monsoons are coming.  So I am looking forward to putting out some crazy exciting monsoon inspired paintings.

This week I am in the studio transitioning and focusing on the up and coming Les Femmes des Montage 14th Annual Art Show and Sale. Saturday, July 14, 2018 from 10-4. Hosted at the Hassayampa Inn Marina Room.

Les Femmes artists will partner with the  Highlands Center for Natural History in support of the work they do to help educate the public about nature and the environment. A Raffle will be held for an item from each artist with all proceeds being donated to the Highlands Center. Representatives of the Highland Center will be in attendance to answer questions, distribute information and sell raffle tickets.

So if you are into floral paintings I will be exhibiting them at the Les Femme des Montage. Hope to see you there, and have a safe and fun 4th of July.

Finding That Perfect Sofa, or how eclectic am I…

If you walk into my home you will notice how eclectic it is.  Modern Art along side turn of the century antiques.  I appreciate hand made things, with an artsy feel.

Oh yes, I have a purple sofa… A very mid-century styled sofa.  So today I thought I would share a bit about my creative sons Ted and John Lewis who happen to own a boutique furniture company, Lewis Interiors.  They have an appreciation for all things Mid-Century.  In fact they design and build in Phoenix, Arizona a whole line of Mid Century furniture: chairs, sofas, rockers and ottomans.

Custom built to your criteria, (mine had to be purple) but you can choose your fabric and wood tone. Did I say that they will ship anywhere, my son John used to ship for the railroad so he knows the value of getting a piece from their shop to your home safely and on time.

They are taking their collection to the prestigious Las Vegas Furniture Mart in July and I wish them all the success that they have worked so hard for.

So in my artsy and eclectic way I know that you can have a fabulous look placing a bit of Mid Century into any decor.  Try it out, and check out their website and find that perfect piece for your own space.
