So I have decided to start giving away my art.  Yes you heard me right GIVE AWAY MY ART. Well not all my art but I am starting a monthly give away. To thank all my friends and collectors. Antelope Canyon

A short road trip found me at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and then to Antelope Canyon.  If you are not familiar with this small slot canyon it is situated on the Navajo Reservation and you need permission from the tribe to visit it.

They took a group of us 3 1/2 miles  through a dusty plain in a  WWII deuce and a half with no seat belts and wide open to the elements; that meant hot beating sun and windy conditions.  As I spit out the sand lodged in my throat I will continue.

We came to this amazing slot canyon and the magic began.  Under the excellent guidance of our Navajo tour guide we proceeded into the canyon by foot, a bottle of water and my cell phone the only things I was allowed to carry in.  The water for survival and the cell phone for pictures.  Thus began the most beautiful images I have ever taken photos of.

The abstraction of the light streaming through the opening above and the unusual shapes made by eons of water running through the canyon created abstract forms of color and sensual movement that mesmerized me. It also gave me plenty of inspiration to start a new abstract collection of studies on vellum that will be ready for the open studio tour in October.

This is the first one and is ready for sale now. If you are into Southwest design you will love these.  If you are a lover of abstract art you will love these. If you love pink, orange, or purple and all the various shades that they come in you will love these.

Thankful for Winter Snow

SNOWFALL

Winter is upon us and we have had a beautiful season so far. Those of us living in the Southwest are very thankful for every bit of moisture that falls from the heavens. Living in a forested area if we get snow we are doubly grateful for this form of precipitation because it seeps into the ground with no runoff.

 

This week my praise painting is all about snow, and the blessing it becomes. A delight to the eye, the snow falls heavy with moisture and settles in the nettles of existence. At first seeming to suffocate but ultimately nurturing all life.

Praise paintings are early morning studies on vellum paper that I create after my meditation and journaling when I first step into the studio. Simple heartfelt quick studies of what is on my mind.

My favorite time of year

LIQUID AMBERCan you feel it?  That crisp coolness in the morning, the rustle of the breeze, fall is settling in. Just like clockwork the Liquid Ambers over at the farmers market have started to turn and I am happy that summer is starting to say it’s adieu.

That is why I love the beginning of September a time of transition from the hot humid summer to the coolness of fall, and a new color pallet for me. Since the Liquid Amber is the first tree to herald in this time of year I thought it appropriate to paint it.  It is also the harbinger of the busiest time of year for me as a local artist.  Just one month from the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour. I am busy in the studio painting so you all have a fresh supply of beautiful art to see.

I love this new piece because of the beautiful contrast between the orange and purple, two complimentary colors.  You know me and my love of purple, it is my new neutral.  Purple goes with many of the colors I choose to paint with. A bit of purple in a painting is a wonderful thing…

STORMS A COMING

“Storms A Coming”  9″ X 12″ Acrylic on Vellum

This is one of my early morning studies where I was practicing technique. I wanted the feel of a storm coming yet the sun was still shinning through that sucker hole as my meteorologist husband would say.  So the painting is bright and colorful yet the sky is threatening. It definitely makes the colors pop and the shadows interesting; a favorite of  many of my followers.

It is a practice of mine to work on vellum paper to warm up in the studio before I start my day of painting.  It keeps my skills honed and allows me time for experimentation. This is an example of atmospheric experimentation,  I wanted my sky full of drama yet a landscape full of promise. Spring flowers popping up from winter rains.  Though we are experiencing extreme draught in our part of the world I am ever hopeful that God will nurture our arid lands.

This painting is matted and ready to frame total area 12″ X 16″.  A great value since I sell them far below my canvas work.

MISTY MORNING

“Misty Morning” 8″ X 8″ acrylic on gallery wrap canvas

I love fall mornings when the mist begins to rise off the desert and it is indistinguishable between the sky and earth. A coolness settles in, shapes blur and dreams become real. This is how I felt this morning as I was sitting on the deck planning a day in the studio. A cool dampness settled in and I recalled this scene from long ago. So it became probable that I would paint that feeling and make dreams become real.

This is how all my paintings start, a feeling, an emotion, a memory, they come to life in my being and then show up on a canvas. It is how creativity works in me. I praise this experience and how it brings the light into my life.

This must be number 22 in my 30 in 30 challenge, I have lost count, but I have not lost the magic.

PASSING THROUGH ON THE WAY…

PASSING BY ON THE WAY

Half way through my 30 in 30 challenge and the last half will be a bit more tasking since I have the Studio Tour coming up in two weeks. But that is another story and today I am still finding creativity oozing out of me. It has been fun experimenting with different color palettes. Fuchsia was todays color choice. I think I have painted mesas in every color imaginable, so today was no exception.

As for the reason I painted them Fuchsia… What could be more exciting than driving miles  down I-40 through Arizona and New Mexico heading on the way to somewhere.  You got the idea. I have traveled this route many times and the collective memories are etched in my brain. I have been thinking about a road trip after the Studio Tour, which lead me to remember the comforting rhythm of the car wheels traveling down such roads. The topography is mesas, hundreds of mesas. Mostly brown, but when the sun hits them just right, they magically turn beautiful colors. So todays fuchsia becomes mesas and the familiar cadence of a road trip.

HIDDEN PONDThis is number 10 in my 30 in 30 challenge, it’s moodiness is just perfect for this cool and dreary morning that lead to a wicked storm with hail pelting the deck.  But lo and behold the sun in shining at this moment with the sound of thunder in the background.  It has been a crazy monsoon season.

I love the depth of this painting which is created by putting pops of light colors in this instance turquoise next to patches of dark grey and blacks.  It is just layer upon layer of darks and lights until the right effect appears.  Not knowing what a painting will become until close to finish is exciting for me.  It is a very meditative process and my mindfulness of my surroundings always shows up in the painting.

I am loving this challenge as I journey through these 30 days one painting at a time.

LONE TREE

“Lone Tree”  9″ X 12″ acrylic on paper

Day five of my 30 paintings in 30 days brought me to a color palette of Ultramarine Blue, Brilliant Purple, and Sage Green.  I love working in triads and mixing the paints subtly together.  This turned out to be a quick painting, as was yesterdays.  I think I have found my groove. I love doing these experimental paintings it flexes my creativity, spontaneously riveting me into a firm painting.

I seem to always revert back to my purple and blue color palette, just seems right to me.  These colors lead me to a spiritual mindset and I begin to meditate as I paint. I feel blessed that I can find a mindfulness as I work. I love to reflect on the environment that I was planted into, the Southwest; an arid and empty space that gives you room to grow and nourish your thirst and vision.

VERGA, STORMS IN THE HIGH DESERT

The monsoons are winding down, and we will have fewer of them as we move through September, our greatest chance for a nice storm will be this week. I love when they blossom into steady rain for our parched deserts here in the Southwest. No, I don’t want flooding like our dear friends in Houston have experienced just a nice gentle rain. I love the anticipation of their approach, the verga in the distance collecting over the mesas and foot hills, the feeling of moisture on your skin and the smell of sage and soil. This is when Arizona is the most beautiful.

The above painting, #3 in my 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, depicts this beautiful feeling in some of my favorite colors; turquoise and magenta. So onward with my challenge. I will be painting in the studio on this Labor Day holiday, enjoying the clouds building up in the distance with an expectation of sweet rain returning this coming week.
