“Watchman”… a painting for an Advent Cantata

“Watchman” 40″ X 30″ Original Acrylic painting on 1 3/4″ gallery wrap canvas

It’s that time of year when my thoughts turn to the Trinity Presbyterian’s Advent Cantata. I am busy rehearsing it and this year the music is especially beautiful with Joseph Martin’s and Heather Sorenson’s new Cantata “Christmas Dreams”. Some years the music just calls for an art piece and this year was one of those.  The Advent Cantata is being performed the first weekend in December which corresponds to the first weekend of Advent so I needed to paint the art piece early.

This last weekend was the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour and since I am asked to do a demo during those three days; I felt it was a great time to work on the Advent painting. Some of you who came to the Open Studio saw it in the process.

My original idea was a Child’s Dream where a small  Christmas Manger would be under a tree and the ornaments would consist of Magi, Shepards and the Christ Child. One of the guests during the tour said, “keep it simple”.  I took it to heart since I myself was not sure the first version would really tell the story I wanted it to.  So since I work very fluidly and intuituve, the “Watchman” came to be.

Now the symbolism gives a profound statement to the beautiful words in the song  The Promise and the Prayer, “Here the music of the stars, words of hope from ancient bards. People hear the glad Noel: God will come, Emanuel.”

From Creation to Resurrection… looking forward to Good Friday

Deep Under

This is Easter Week and I received a message from our “Friday Project” leader that our church Trinity Presbyterian in Prescott, AZ was having a very unique church service Friday evening, in remembrance of Good Friday.

No pressure here… “Do you happen to have a couple of paintings that would work well with our Good Friday Service? We are leading the congregation from the creation story through the fall/brokenness then through the incarnation to the cross and hopefully to the joy of resurrection.”

If you know my art most of it is brightly colored with lot’s of movement and positive-energy.  So I looked through my inventory.

Finding The Path

Yes, I did find two awesome paintings that will work well for their intended mission. These two paintings above are perfect in their story of hope.  The story of Christ is about finding love and being born again in hope and mercy.

“Deep Under” can be expressed as this…  “The murkiness of life can sometimes feel as if we are drowning. What if we dove deep to find our inner peace? Instead of drowning we would be floating in love.”

“Finding the Path” can be expressed as this… “After a bout with cancer I attended a life changing retreat to transition to  a new life path.  I traveled from darkness to light, as I opened my eyes to God’s marvelous creation of me.”

So even the darkest of paintings can shine with the light of resurrection. I am looking forward to Friday night, and the Friday Project. 6:00pm at Trinity.

RIVER’S BEND

RIVERS BEND

“River’s Bend”  20″ X 20″ acrylic on 1 1/2″ gallery wrap canvas

This painting reminds me of so many things: fishing with my dad, camping with my brother, tubing with my kids. Cold mountain rivers are a favorite of mine, especially after a long day of hiking. I love to take my boots off and wade in the water, replenish my thirst and relax on the shore. They restore my soul too. Nature in all it’s forms brings me closer to the divine and gives me a pathway to mindfulness. I have come to understand that this is why I paint, to bring me closer to the light of God and to share that joy with others.

I will be sharing my Journey To Faith Through Art, at the “Friday Project” at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Prescott, AZ on October 13th. If you are local and want an inspiring evening join me for dinner and fellowship before the service. Learn about the Friday Project here.
